LHM – Thom Craver, on not provided

Doc and Gabs were able to stalk and hog-tie Thom Craver (he really didn’t put up much of a fight) for last week’s Level Headed Marketing session and were even lucky enough to have Steve Plunkett join in. The discussion, like in so many other venues last week, was surrounding not provided, which now replaces 100% of the keyword data in Google Analytics.

As you may have noticed, there’s no shortage of people wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth, wailing about how now, they won’t be able to do their jobs. As Thom pointed out on his blog, if you believe that, you need to find a new job.

The point is, there are plenty of other ways to gather that information. All it takes is a little imagination and a willingness to do the work. Besides, in the long run, I think losing that data will be a blessing in disguise. [Read more…]

LHM – Amy Vernon on Community Building

Our last Level Headed Marketing session was with Amy Vernon discussing the art and science of community building. I have to admit, it was an educational process for me, as I was guilty of having made some assumptions about what the job entails. Boy, did I get my eyes opened!

Community management is SO much more than just promoting posts on Facebook and Twitter! It’s not just knowing how to interact with the community, either. There’s a long list of skills one has to develop in order to effectively attract and engage people, as well as develop the business’s image, present the right message and constantly inject life into the community. LHM – The Internet, Present and Future

Bill Slawski needs no introduction in the SEO world, but for those of you that may be new to this corner of the Internet, Bill is the guy that does what most of us don’t have the patience for… he follows the patent applications and grants that affect search.

As the preeminent authority on patent interpretation, he’s the go-to guy for many of us when we want to understand all the ramifications of a patent, without having to pore over it ourselves. He has more understanding than most people of what the search engines may be trying to accomplish and the mechanisms they might be employing to do so.
